Research by the Institution of Occupational Safety and Health has revealed that many outside workers are failing to protect themselves from the harmful effects of the sun. If this includes your workforce and employees, how could you deal with this?
The Institute of occupational safety and health’s “No Time to Lose” campaign focuses on preventing occupational cancer which is linked to working in the sun. The campaign has identified that approximately 50 people die each year as a result of being exposed to the sun at work and a further 250 cases of malignant melanoma are registered each year by those working outside including those who work in construction, agriculture and leisure industries.
Common Mistake- People often mistake the cloud cover as sufficient protection from the sun’s harmful UV rays.
What to do? You may not take action or act upon this blog, however you shouldn’t ignore the risks if you work in the sun or have staff who spend a large proportion of their working day outside. It’s about taking a reasonable approach to keeping yourself and your staff healthy while at work.
Tip 1-You should not provide sun protection creams or sprays for two reasons.
You may account numerous issues if any of the products cause irritation or allergic reaction to staff.
The cost of providing such creams and sprays would become an expense.
Tip 2- Try to plan a work schedule so that exposure to the sun at peak times can be minimised. E.g midday is the hottest part of the day- encourage your staff to take their break at that time and out of the sun.
Tip 3-DO NOT allow employees to remove work clothes. We know it can get hot whilst working in the sun but you are putting yourself and your staff more at risk if you allow them to work shirtless for example. Not only is skin in direct contact with the sun, it is also exposed to any other hazards that work tasks may create. Encourage the use of loose fitting, long-sleeved tops and trousers where possible.
